The Proper Ways to Efficiently Save Riches

October 25, 2008

In this world where almost all things have its own equivalent and charges, knowing how to save on gas and electricity bills are two major factors that you need to learn. Electricity bills are often the most disregarded. If you are used to paying high amounts on electric bills and spending frequently on fuel for your car then perhaps you need to do something about it. You cannot stay on this scenario for a long time and you need to move away quickly.

One of the best saving tips in minimizing fuel consumption is to avoid using the car air conditioner particularly if it is really not necessary. Car air conditioners alone can amass of up to 20% in consumption, definitely not much of a good sign if you are saving on gas. In addition, you can make way for water 4 gas conversions, if you are really serious about saving money and fuel.

On the other hand, you can save on your electricity bills if you know which appliances to use and which ones are contributing greater energy consumption. Through this, you can formulate a way to curtail usage of home electricity to something middling. If you are always using your laptop or computer, do not leave it in sleep mode and have it turned off instead.

These are just simple steps to follow to save gas and electricity. Remember that your driving habits and electrical usage determines how much bucks you will be able to save, if giving these simple hints a try.

Save Money on Credit Cards

October 25, 2008

“Use the card for emergency purposes”, you would normally hear this from a telemarketer offering you a free credit card application. Truth is these markerers are more likely concerned about you applying and getting the card rather than living up to their sales pitch of saving money on purchases, and using it in urgent situations. This is how tricky the world of sales and marketing is, but you need not be deceived, for you can have a credit card without having to pay riches on interest rates, higher APR and membership fees.

What a person looking for a credit card for immediate money crunch’s sake should do is to compare credit card offers from different credit card companies. There are companies presenting pre-selected offers with 0% interest for the first six months, but you need to be aware that once you miss a single payment, 0% interest for six months is gone and you automatically have a ballooning 16-20% interest charges on purchases and balance transfers. Credit card business is really tricky, given this fact, it is important that before applying for one, make certain that, you have a free application, you have fixed 0% percent interest rates on the duration of time given, as much as possible no monthly or annual membership fees and no other obligation and hidden charges.

Although you can save money if you try to lead a credit card free life; but if you find it difficult not to have one, money experts’ advice is to spend in moderation and purchase only those that are necessary and not those you want and desire.

The Do’s of Conserving Hard Cash

October 25, 2008

How do students save money? You might be a student asking this kind of question with answers you simply want to discover for yourself. If you are struggling to save money, yet are easily lured by a lot of temptations like shopping, going to the pub, watching movies, eating out with friends and partying, then you can never save notes at all.

To get you started on your saving-money objective, here are the following tips and helpful hints:

1. Set a timeframe. This works for people who are planning to save money but are having a hard time making it possible. As a student, the best thing you can do is to make a journal of all your expenses on a daily basis and how much money is left in your pocket. Afterwards, set a specific date along with a desired amount that you wish to save. This record and timeframe will help you push through with your saving objectives in no time.

2. Set your goals and purposes. Why are you saving money? Is it for your mom’s birthday or a present for yourself for being an A student? You must have an objective and purpose why you are saving up. This will help you motivate yourself to save more and spend wisely.

3. Open a savings account. Even at an early stage of life, students must know how to open a bank account and generate the practice of depositing saved money, extra cash from parents, earnings from a part time job, and everything that is needed to be saved should be saved.

Planning your food savings

October 21, 2008

When asking about debt advice, it is not often that anyone thinks about the smaller savings that can be made on your food budget. My grandma used to say “Save a penny for a rainy day”. She was right, and every penny saved on my food budget had an impact on my financial spend. Saving money on food and making dinners on a budget may be your saving grace, but it does require planning and perfect execution!

I have a few ideas and suggestions, and I hope you may find this helpful:

Step 1

Meat is very expensive in general, especially if you buy at a supermarket. There are many clever ways to substitute your meat and still get the best value for your money. Buy pork mince instead of beef. It is usually cheaper. Turkey instead of chicken can bring a new flavour to your table AND save on your food budget. If you must have beef, consider the cheaper braising steak. Also try and buy from your local butcher. They have prime cuts at good prices AND will pack and prepare your meat in the right sizes for you and your family. This ensures no wastage and you can buy in bulk and freeze the meat.

Step 2

Use a trusted website and find the cheapest supermarket. Don’t get suckered into advertising gimmicks. Try a bit of late shopping too. Many shops reduce prices late at night.

Step 3

Avoid take outs. It is cheaper to buy for a small family and cook the meal yourself.

Step 4

Shop online. By setting a budget and shopping online, you are not side-tracked by advertising. Most often you will find that you buy what is needed. Once your initial shop is done, you have an instant shopping list and repeating shops is easy.

Step 5

Plan your meals. Know what you want to cook before you go shopping, and stick to your list!

Step 6

Although the packaging may not look too appealing, the taste is usually the same when you buy the shops ‘own brand’ and you can save up to 33% on your food budget.

Step 7

Use the loyalty card and voucher systems. There is no shame in that.

Step 8

If you are considering the offers available by your local store. Remember that sometimes the saving is not worth spending. For instance: Saving 5p when you buy three juices for £3 when you really just wanted one…

Step 9

Avoid the local corner shop. As convenient as they may be, they are VERY expensive.

Step 10

Buy your fresh fruit and vegetables from the local market. You will be amazed at the atmosphere and the quality of the goods.

Look Out For Sales

October 21, 2008

Take Advantage Of SalesIn the current financial climate, saving money has never been so important. But when it comes to gifts you also don’t want to look cheap, so how do you overcome this problem without breaking the bank? Is there a way to buy designer or fine jewellery that someone will love without it costing the earth?

The first piece of advice I would give is to try to make your own designer pieces. It’s not as difficult as it looks and you can buy beautiful boxes and pouches to put them in. I’ve made several jewellery items for friends and they are stunned when I say I made them myself. Earrings are easy and there are a lot of tutorials online: just do Internet searches. Using more expensive findings such as real silver or gold (not plated) or Swarovski crystal beads instead of glass or plastic will mean they will look (and be) of a very high quality. However, if you really aren’t that creative there are alternatives.

The credit crunch is hitting everyone hard - including people who make a living by selling things. Therefore you can (if you have the confidence) use this to your advantage. Most people would prefer to make a cheaper sale than no sale at all so try to haggle, especially at jewellery markets or independent boutiques where designers sell their jewellery. You might find people are more willing to barter than they might have been a year or two ago. Consumers are spending less so any sale they can get makes a difference, even if it means less profit than they would like. Besides, if they won’t haggle, what have you lost?

The biggest tip I can give is to look out for, and take advantage of, sales. There are sales wherever you go at the moment: on the high street, the Internet, and that means you can save money. Because people are spending less, stores want to entice you to buy from them with lower prices. This could mean that last season’s jewellery is very cheap, even for fine or designer pieces, and even the current season could be reduced. Nobody will know what you paid for their gift and they’ll get a present worth a lot more than you had paid so you won’t need to worry about looking cheap.

Remember to shop around as even designer pieces can vary in price greatly from store to store, and buying online is often cheaper than in department stores. If you follow these tips then hopefully you’ll snag a great bargain!

Be Green And Save Money

October 13, 2008

Sometimes it seems that the entire world is facing bankruptcy. Every day, the news regarding the economy seems worse than ever, and it appears that few people are unaffected by financial issues, or free of the fear that they will lose their savings, job or house. As bills continue to rise, and you need a mortgage to fill your car up with petrol, we all need to find ways of reducing our expenses.

One of the best ways of doing this is by using ‘green’ methods, which will not only save you money, but help the environment as well.

Here are my top ten tips:

1: Transport - One of the best and greenest ways of travelling about a city is by bike. In Barcelona, where I live, the council’s bike rental scheme is hugely popular, and allows you to pick up a bike in one location, and leave it at another. All for the bargain price of €24 per year, with no worries about theft, and without the expense of running a car or parking.

2: Health - Walking is another excellent way of travelling around a city, allowing you to see more of your surroundings. The only energy it uses is your own, with the added bonus of benefiting your health.

3: Food - For those with a garden, growing your own vegetables is great exercise and you can enjoy pesticide-free food. Even in a city, with only a balcony, you can use containers to provide yourself with some tasty fresh food.

4: Energy Saving - Turn off lights when you´re not in a room, with bills so exorbitant why pay more than you have to?

5: Move to a warm country - No need for heating In Spain!

6: Buy second-hand clothes - eBay shopping allows you to change your wardrobe frequently and cheaply. No need to get bored. A good rummage in charity shops can turn up some great bargains, and helps charities at the same time.

7: Re-use everything you can - We are so accustomed to throwing unwanted items away, and yet many things can serve a different purpose. Use plastic food containers for storage, old clothes for cleaning cloths.

8: Make your own cleaning products - There is no need for the vast array of products that fill our cupboards. Simple ingredients such as bicarbonate of soda, white vinegar and lemon juice cover most cleaning needs, eliminating the need for toxic chemicals in the home, which damage the environment. You can even buy chemical-free ´washing balls´ for laundry, saving on detergent.

9: Look after your possessions - Keep your shoes in good condition, repair clothes, and you won´t need to buy new ones.

10: Join Freecycle - Donors and recipients can feel a glow of self-congratulation at keeping items out of landfill, and all kinds of goods can be acquired with only transport costs to pick them up.

Insulating Your Home

October 10, 2008

A properly insulated home will save you money on heating bills in the long run. It makes sense to ensure your home is protected from the elements otherwise you’re simply throwing your money away. By insulating your home effectively not only are you saving money, but you can also reduce your carbon emissions. The following article will outline some very useful tips on home insulation.

Insulation Factors

Firstly you should think about the climate you live in, the design and age of your home and what your budget is when choosing insulation R-Values for your home. For example you should use high density insulation such as foam boards in exterior walls and cathedral ceilings.

Ventilation

Ventilation plays a large role in providing moisture control and reducing summer cooling bills. Attic vents can be installed along the entire ceiling cavity to help ensure proper airflow from the soffit to the attic to make a home more comfortable and energy efficient.

Areas of Heat Loss

Recessed light fixtures can be a major source of heat loss, but you need to be careful how close you place insulation next to a fixture unless it is marked IC—designed for direct insulation contact. Check your local building codes for recommendations.

Should you insulate your home?

The answer is yes if you own an old home (pre 1980), you find your house is uncomfortably cold in the winter or you pay high energy bills. If you’d like to find out more about saving money through insulating your home have a look at our ebook we have for sale.

Make Your Student Life Easier

October 1, 2008

It’s hard being a student at times. You’re practically forced in to debts, and to be honest there’s no way to avoid them. You can however be smart with your spending, and hopefully come away from University with as little debt as possible.

NUS Discounts

Students live life on a tight budget, and as a result many companies offer student discounts. A lot of these companies don’t advertise this so the best thing to do as a consumer is to ask. There’s no harm in asking! A good card to have in your wallet is the NUS Extra card. You have to pay for it, but it offers some excellent discounts.

Budget

It’s important to know how much money you have coming in. Most of it will be from loans, which you will one day have to pay back. Be strict, and don’t spend more than you have. Think through all of your purchases, and make sure you’re always getting the best deal. Shop around, flash your NUS card, whatever it takes to save some money.

Booze Money

No ones going to deny the fact that students know how to enjoy a drink or two. A large proportion of your loan will be spent on partying, but money can still be saved. Set yourself a budget of how much you’d like to spend in a night. If you’re one of those people who gets drunk and winds up spending far more than they wanted to then simply leave your debit cards at home. Make the student union and student bars your frequent drinking holes as they sell drinks at great prices.

Get a Job

If you’re struggling with money you should avoid borrowing more. You don’t want to come out of University with more debt than necessary. The best way to find work is to get your foot in the door before anyone else. Apply for jobs over the summer when everyone is back at home, or move in to your place earlier. You don’t want to find all the jobs have gone when you arrive. You should also try to organize yourself some work through the periods when you’re not at University and get some money saved.
